BUT this camera looked brand new!! The package showed up perfectly fine no damage and the camera was packaged very well! I'm a fairly new photographer hobbyist but hoping to get more serious about it and wanted to upgrade from the little D I learned on.
I'm very happy about going with this model. It's definitely a step up, but if you know what you're doing, it takes no time at all to get used to the D It feels very sturdy and well made. It's just a bit bigger than my old D but I doubt anyone will see that as a problem. It's compatible with my handful of lenses, which was definitely another determining factor.
Overall, I think it's a great option if you're getting to that middle ground between "what's a camera? Highly recommended! If you look carefully through the DSLR offer from all major brands, there are very few things that might make you buy a different one than the D You might say it's a subjective point of view, but since I've been shooting film too with the great F5 and has my share of digital compact experience Lumix LX3K , I've been wanting to upgrade to a different, presumably better DSLR only a few months after I bought this one, thinking that it was obsolete.
It has now been over a year, within which new, amazing DSLRs have been launched. Of course, if a few hundred buck is no problem, get the D, or if DX is not good enough for you, by all means get the Canon 6D, the best, cheapest full frame to date. But that's just me :. Just like a lot of others, I too got a camera with the notorious back focus 'problem'! But I was not worried because, before deciding on D I did a search and found that back focus or front focus issue is not a specific D or Nikon issue.
Canon, Pentax, Sony, Olympus They use different terminology though.. So, fine tuning looked like something that is not uncommon with pro-prosumer type camera bodies. Because this also could be viewed as having 'more control' over our gear, at some point. I did not face any back focus issue with my D or my Canon T2i , so, there indeed was a moment of frustration when I got a camera that looks somewhere else when I ask it to 'look there'.
Personally, I find this as a pain than a problem because I had to fine tune two of my lenses a 35mm 1. So, should one stay away from D because of this terrible back focus 'problem'? D might back focus when paired with some lenses but at the same time, the camera comes with a built-in feature to address this concern. If that fails to resolve the issue, then, ONLY then, it becomes a problem.
A few things among the many I liked about D 1. Excellent, durable build quality 2. Great picture quality 3. More direct controls 4. Long battery life 6. Two memory card slots 7. Decent video 8. User control over fps personal preference. I have one of the shakiest hands in the world and hence I often shoot more than one frame whenever I shoot critical shots. Many a time, 6fps is wasting memory by filling the card with similar shots, especially considering D7K's low buffer What I did not like: 1.

Plasticky LCD cover It is to be noted that this is neither a beginner camera nor designed for people with no patience and hence one should not expect great shooting experience straight out of the box with any lens attached to it. I am not a professional photographer, so my review comes from an enthusiast point of view having come from a D Incidentally, I am keeping my D because I cannot bear to part with it. I have several lenses to pair with my D including a 35 f1. Look and feel After becoming so used to the D lightweight body, the D seems much bulkier but in a good way. It feels good in the hand and paired with the equally tank-like mm it has some weight behind it. Moving from the D to D was easy as the controls are familiar.
It also saves battery by keeping the live view off. However, like most things with this camera, you can customise it so this is on by default should you wish. I like how most of the main function buttons fall where you naturally hold the camera. My one gripe was that when I was moving the autofocus point while looking through the viewfinder, my thumb was right underneath my cheek making it slightly awkward.
A minor negative in the scheme of things. You had to go into the main menu to turn it on or off. This took about 10 seconds of annoyance. So, now when if I want this on, I can just turn the dial. The beauty of this camera is the huge amount of customisable features. U1 and U2 very useful, you can assign the various function buttons to do different things - AE lock, DOF preview, etc.
There are dials at the front where your right finger sits and at the back where the thumb is. This makes it super quick to change any the ISO and aperture. Performance The AF is much faster than I was expecting. It locks onto targets super-quick. I have read in some reviews about a back-focusing problem which seemed to be quite common.
I unfortunately had that same problem. All my lenses except from the 85mm f1. With the mm I had to make a adjustment. It seems to be pretty much fine now.
However, I've read that because it is a zoom it is much harder to fine tune. The occasional photo misses the focus slightly, but this is me pixel peeping at I will probably bring it into my local shop to get this checked over. I agree to an extent. No doubt putting the D and D side by side, the D wins hands down however I was maybe expecting too much from this. In good light, up to ISO I can barely notice any noise at all. After that noise starts to appear, when you reach ISO , you can see noise but it's not bad.
I am happy to use images up to ISO I don't print images very large but I would be surprised if you see noticeable noise for an ISO in an A4 print. There are many other features which I haven't mentioned but there's too many for this review! In conclusion, the image quality and ISO performance is fantastic. Coupled with the huge amount of customisable features and quick functions to make your life as a photographer easier, this makes it a hugely recommended camera from me.

I have loved to death some models and also been very underwhelmed by others as they have progressed through the years. I burned through 2 of the original models A77 i in a year and really thought this is it for me and Sony.
But because I have an arsenal of Zeiss lenses that I love I didn't want to have to change and start over. So I gave the A77 ii a shot no pun intended. I am so glad I did. I am professional photographer and shoot daily. My specialty is actor's headshots and I love the way this camera couples with my Zeiss fixed mm lens. I am not a technical person so I can't really discuss the mechanics but let's just say the pictures speak for themselves.
I will buy 2 or 3 more of these so I have them for years to come. I go through cameras pretty quickly because I shoot so much approximately 10, or more per week. By bestinshow on June 5, Watt Top Contributor: Photography.
These include a better sensor, a deeper operating system, a much better AF system, a better JPEG engine from a better central processor, and several other tweaks. Sony really did their homework on this upgrade to the A77, and they have done an excellent job squeezing at least another full f-stop or more out of the sensor relative to its predecessor - at least in JPEGs but see the - typically - contentious debate in the comments section over this question of how much low light functioning has been improved.
While that sounds like a lot, read on to see why this number can be misleading if taken too literally and is also effectively reduced by several technologies in the A77II. Additionally, the noise from this sensor has much less of the wormy chroma component, and more luminence, makng it visually less toxic. So while DxO suggests perhaps only a third of a stop better, the real bump is more like a full stop in terms of visual image quality. Is it as good as the NX1 and Nikon No but it's way better than its predecessor, and the DxO numbers shouldn't really been seen as reflecting how much better.
So, while it's no low light phenom, it's decent, and a lot better than the older gen because of the real reduction in chroma noise. These semipro APS-C cameras are still plenty big, but not quite as big and hefty as the current full frame pro cameras by Sony, Canon and Nikon, particularly when you hang typical glass on them.
If you want to take a very modest step down in low light ability without giving up anything else and saving some not-inconsiderable size and weight - to say nothing of cost - this class of camera might be a best compromise solution. This camera basically hits the sweet spot for me, making very small concessions in functionality to full frame equipment, while offering many professional grade features. If you can put aside fan boy loyalties, a recent history of this class of cameras suggests that the Big Players have taken turns leapfrogging each other in relationship to what might be the best semi-pro camera.
When it came out in , the Nikon was probably the best camera in this prosumer group. When it first appeared in , the Sony A77 probably displaced the Nikon as the best semiprofessional camera although its low light performance was undeniably poor.
In , Nikon returned the favor, with the Nikon , which received high marks from Digital Photography Reviews and several other professional reviewers, and likely bumped both the previous generation A77 and the OM5 off the top spot. As undeniably great as the Nikon is, I believe that overall, it still is not quite as good a camera as the A77ii, particularly if the A77ii is equipped with the Sony 2.
Competition has really been good for the class. All this leapfrogging drives the real progress and just how far the prosumer group has come in four years. The cameras keep getting better more resolution AND more low light ability , while the price stays about the same. Of course, this is happening in virtually all sectors of the DP world, as sensor design improvements keep moving the goalposts. Indeed, any of the current generation APS-C or FF 24MP sensors will be equal with or slightly out-resolve Kodachrome 64 in bright light my all time favorite film while demolishing it in low light.
That looks to me like a LOT of money for fairly slim margins. But in terms of a price and especially weight? Again, slim margins for a lot of money. But if I was shooting for a living, those margins might suddenly be worth it. Compared to an A99 with the Zeiss , the A77 with a drops about 1. Carry the A99 with the vs. Plus the A99 and many other FF pro cameras have no built-in flash, so you can add yet another lb at least, tacking on a flash unit if you need extra light.

To achieve this run of awards on just ONE class like the SLT models would be pretty impressive, but to do this in such quite different models of digital camera is clearly unprecedented. But whatever brand loyalties you might feel, one has to admit that this is an astonishing run of good form, almost out of nowhere, and starting from well behind the established players.
Although they started with major expertize in sensor design, as a major driver of this great run, Sony has also been more willing to take risks than any other DP player, while Nikon, and Canon even more so, seem relatively content to plod along with well-established formulas and take far fewer risks, and both have been more reluctant to move away from time-honored concepts of DSLR operation - witness their slow response to the explosion in mirrorless ILC, which is now being dominated by other players beside Canikon specifically Olympus, Panasonic, Sony, Samsung and Fuji.
This suggests that some tweaking of these time honored formulas might be badly overdue. So if you are open to a brave and refreshing new approach in DLSR photography, you might carefully consider the A77ii. Combined with improved JPEG engine, at least a full stop if not 1. One of the best viewfinders in the digital world, with a big, bright and detailed view of your subject but see cons.

Brilliant and innovative hardware design in the SLT-EVF concept paired with occasionally infuriating lack of attention to operational details - esp.
What is Sony thinking, in producing a highly useful version! Conclusions: Sony, despite mixed reviews on this point in relationship to some past products, appears to have been actually listening in relationship to the SLT line. Once you learn how to exploit the full potential of all the technologies in this system, you will be astonished at what low light shooting you can do.
My one major disappointment is the apparent failure to upgrade the CPU and sensor data line to support the full frame sampling seen in the RXiii and RX10 and the associated absence of an 4K video capability as I think 4K is going to explode over the next two years, as 4K sets are already entering the mainstream.
Highly recommended overall, as perhaps the most well-rounded APS-C camera. Samsung appears poised to drop the NX1, after creating a brilliant design, making it clear that innovative designs, and market success are not synonymous. This is a constricting field big body cameras , given the enormous reach and penetration of better and better cell phone cameras into almost every sector of digital photography excepting the very high end. It may be that at some relatively near point in the future, we will have cell phones, and high end bodies, and nothing else.

It took a little getting used to. Finally everything I've always wanted in a digital camera! It took a little getting used to the different buttons on the back, but once I got the hang of them I liked them better than what I'd had before.
The hand grip feels more sturdy than my last camera. It is a little heavy but with a nice neck strap it has not been an issue. All the issues I had with my old camera have been addressed with this one. No more switching from viewfinder to the screen, but the view finder can be closed if needed. The wifi makes sharing my pictures a breeze. I love this camera. My main use for it is high school sports. The AF-C capability of this camera blows my mind.
My pictures come out looking like a movie real. The only thing I will warn you about is the amount of photos you will take when using this camera with AF-C mode. Make sure you get a huge memory card. Also if taking constant bursts you will reach a point where you run out of buffer and it will slow down. Keep that in mind and shoot in small bursts if possible.
